COVID-19 Policies & Procedures

JLU is diligently working to improve our policies and procedures during this unprecedented time to keep our students, families and staff safe.  Please see below the current changes now in place to help fight this pandemic.

Daily Screening Criteria

All employees, volunteers, parents, children and essential visitors must answer all required COVID-19 screening questions and take their temperature daily to confirm a body temperature lower than 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit prior to entry to the building.

STUDENT PROCEDURES

Please expect that a health check will be completed on arrival by the classroom teacher including taking their temperature, as well as asking parents screening questions to be answered on behalf of their children.

ADULT PROCEDURES

OCFS has provided the ability for adults - parents, staff and visitors, to do a self-assessment each day prior to arriving at JLU. The self-screening will be verified electronically at the check-in system for parents and staff, while visitors will need to complete a written verification.

Exclusion Criteria

All children and staff will be excluded from care if they are showing any mild symptoms of illness which include but are not limited to the following:
  • Fever over 99 with any other symptoms of illness
  • Fever over 100 with no other symptoms
  • Persistent coughing
  • Any signs of respiratory illness
If children need to be sent home for mild signs of illness:
  • they will immediately be excluded from their classroom and wait in the main office on the lower level of the building until pick-up.
  • Emergency pick-up persons need to be prepared to arrive at the center within ONE HOUR of notification of a sick child.
  • All emergency pick-up persons will be called until a pick-up plan is made.
  • All siblings of the child being excluded will also need to be picked up at the same time to limit the number of times people are entering the building.
If excluded from care due to illness, JLU is mandating that the excluded child and all siblings do not to return to the center for a minimum of 48 hours, regardless of symptoms or medical documentation.

Face Covering Required

OCFS and the CDC has deemed wearing a face covering mandatory for all adults who will come within 6 feet of others.
  • Employees are mandated to wear face coverings while working in the classroom with children.
  • Parents and visitors must wear a face covering when entering the building.  If not covered, the parent must wait outside the classroom until a teacher is able to release their child to them.
  • School age students, ages 5 - 12, will be asked to wear a face covering while in care at JLU. Exceptions may be made for the following circumstances:
    • for medical reasons with proper documentation
    • while social distancing is in place
    • at direction of a teacher or adult when deemed acceptable

Cleaning and CDC Guidlines

  • Rest mats 6 feet apart - At nap time children’s mats (or cribs) are spaced out as much as possible, ideally 6 feet apart with children laying head to toe.
  • Classroom cleaning - All classrooms are being used for a maximum of 2 days before being deep cleaned using a strong disinfectant.
  • Playground cleaning - Staff are now cleaning all outdoor playground equipment at least every 3 days.
  • Toys stored until further notice. - Any toys that cannot be cleaned and sanitized easily or thoroughly will not be used until further notice.
  • Family-style meal service suspended - In all classrooms, teachers will plate and serve food to children.

Limiting People Entering

When dropping off or picking up children, please make sure to have only ONE ADULT enter the building and escort the children to and from their classrooms.

Administratively, JLU is now conducting tours for admission, as well as new employee interviews via Zoom and are accepting deliveries in our entry way and office areas only.

Gym Closed

Our gym area will be closed for all infant, toddler, preschool and Pre-K students until further notice to decrease the potential for cross contamination. Our School Age students will use this space exclusively until further notice.

Additional Procedure Changes

Each business or entity, including those that have been designated as essential under Empire State Development's Essential Business Guidance, must develop a written Safety Plan outlining how its workplace will prevent the spread of COVID-19.  The JLU COVID-19 SAFETY PLAN is mandatory for all staff, parents and visitors to adhere to during this pandemic.

NYS has also given guidelines which apply to all child care and day camp programs statewide. During the COVID-19 public health emergency, all owners/operators of child care are asked to stay up to date with any changes to state and federal requirements related to child care program and summer day camp entities and incorporate those changes into their operations. At JLU, we are working to meet and exceed the recommedations found in the Reopening NY Child Care & Day Camp Program Guidelines and will continue to check for updates to maintain compliance.
